Veteran astronaut Chris Ferguson announced he would step down from Starliner’s first crewed flight to the International Space Station next year, Boeing and NASA confirmed Wednesday.
’I want to share with you a difficult and personal decision I have had to make,’ Ferguson said in a video posted to his Twitter account. ’I have chosen to step aside as commander of the crewed flight test scheduled for next year.’© Craig Bailey / FLORIDA TODAY Boeing Astronaut Chris Ferguson talks about the Starliner crew test vehicle in the Boeing manufacturing facility at Kennedy Space Center in 2018.
The three-time space shuttle veteran, who went to Boeing as a corporate astronaut after the end of the program, said next year is important to him and his family. He made several commitments he ’simply can’t risk missing.’
Starliner was slated to fly its first crewed mission this year, but its failure to reach the International Space Station during a separate uncrewed test flight in December 2019 has pushed the launch well into 2021.
’I’m not going anywhere – I’m just not going to space next year,’ Ferguson said, confirming he won’t leave Boeing.
Both organizations said he will stay on the Starliner program as the director of mission integration and operations, as well as director of crew systems for Boeing’s Commercial Crew Program. He will be one of the last people the crew sees before leaving Earth and one of the first they see after landing in White Sands, New Mexico.

NASA said veteran astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore, a two-time visitor to the ISS and Navy captain, will replace Ferguson as mission commander. He will join astronauts Mike Fincke and Nicole Mann in the capsule.
’Having had the chance to train alongside and view this outstanding crew as backup has been instrumental in my preparation to assume this position,’ Wilmore said in a statement from Boeing. ’Stepping down was a difficult decision for Chris, but with his leadership and assistance to this point, this crew is positioned for success.’
Wilmore, of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, has spent 178 days in space over the course of one space shuttle mission and one Soyuz trip to the ISS.
’Butch will be able to step in seamlessly, and his previous experience on both space shuttle and space station missions make him a valuable addition to this flight,’ Kathy Lueders, NASA’s associate administrator of human exploration, said in a statement.
